Multi-talented, professional and detailed, Alan Clayton is a Memphis based saxophonist. arranger and live performance artist.

He studied saxophone with Allen Rippe – Professor of Saxophone as well Dr. James Gholson – Professor of Clarinet, Bruce Erskine – Professor of Flute and Dr. Russell Pugh – Professor of Bassoon. He studied additionally with Michael Scott – Professor of Woodwinds at Southwest TN Community College. After receiving his Bachelor of Music degree, AC continued to perform with numerous established acts locally and nationally. AC has performed with artists such as Vicki Winans, Beverly Crawford, Regina Bell, Ann Nesby, The Four Tops and The Temptations as well as host of local Memphis talent to include Wendy Moten, Chick Rogers, Stefanie Bolton, and notable jazz and blues musicians James Williams, Mulgrew Miller, Dr. Herman Green, Joyce Cobb, Ruby Wilson and Preston Shannon to name a few. He has toured nationally and internationally in Europe and Africa.



AC is currently immersed in the Memphis music scene in a variety of disciplines and genres. He performs as a guest musical artist for a plethora of public and private events. He is also a noted side man known for his ability to sight read and experiences in different playing styles indicative of the Memphis experience – Jazz, R&B, Blues, Big Band, Rock, Christian and Gospel. He has been seen on world famous Beale Street playing blues with The BB King All Stars Band, performing with Memphis Jazz Orchestra Big Band and playing covers with the Sugar Shack Band, all in the same week! He currently serves as a 13-year staff musician at Brown Baptist Church, a leading mega church led by Pastor Dr. Bartholomew Orr where he can be found adding his soulfulness performing with the worship band, The Alarm Clocks. He also serves as an adjunct staff instructor with the Memphis Jazz Workshop, a non-profit organization led by noted pianist, Steve Lee, that works with local and regional high school students offering opportunities in learning how to perform and appreciate jazz music.


When not performing live, AC can be found in his home studio composing, recording, and/or creating arrangements for contract productions. His arrangements have graced major regional productions to include A Soulful Christmas Productions series at Brown Baptist, the Memphis Music Hall of Fame Awards production series as well the MLK 50 Award Show. And, if he is not performing, teaching, recording, composing or arranging, you will probably find him practicing one of his many instruments. In addition to playing all of the saxophone family (soprano, alto, tenor and bari), AC plays flute, piccolo, soprano and bass clarinets, bassoon and wind synths.

Native Memphian, musician, multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer and entrepreneur, AC was reared in a musical family listening to the sounds of Gospel, Stax, Motown and 70’s R&B groups. He was introduced to the piano at age 4 and was self-taught on lead and bass guitar. He formed his first band (Pure Soul) with a group of friends while attending Colonial Jr. High where they performed for many school functions. Introduced to jazz at an early age, he attended the acclaimed Watkins Overton High School of Creative and Performing Arts where he garnered many regional and state awards on tenor saxophone and excelled in music theory and composition. After graduating, he entered the University of Memphis as a business major, but after one semester, subsequently changed his major to Jazz and Studio Performance after being offered an opportunity to join the university’s premiere Southern Comfort Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Professor Eugene Rush – Director of Jazz Studies. 


AC has commercially released two albums entitled “I Surrender All” and “Holiday Tones” which can be downloaded on all major music sites. A third album is currently in production and expected to be released in 2021.

In addition to his musical pursuits, AC is an avid technologist with over 30+ years of Information Technology experience. He most recently served for twelve years as Director of Information Technology Services for a leading nonprofit health clinic located in Memphis, TN. AC currently serves as President and CTO of The I.T. Group, LLC, a managed technology services provider specializing in advanced networking and security services.
